In 2021, AMWA founded the Adult Literacy Program (ALP) to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to refugees in Arizona. English Language Acquisition (ELA) is a significant need and the AMWA ALP is unique in providing classes that are appropriate for pre-literate adult students in a culturally supportive community. Classes are currently held online for COVID safety and convenience for both students and teachers. At this time, most ALP students are Rohingya refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma). We are currently expanding the AMWA ALP to refugees from Afghanistan.

ALP volunteer teachers must commit to providing 2-3 hours of ESL lessons per week for at least 6 months. Training, curriculum, and support are provided to volunteer teachers by the ALP team. We also teach citizenship materials as part of the curriculum for refugees who are interested.
